Parenting Time In Ohio

Ohio Parenting Time Attorney

In Ohio, child custody and visitation issues are legally known as "parenting time" issues. Here in Columbus Ohio and throughout the central Ohio region, parenting time is always a critical issue when contemplating a divorce, dissolution or uncontested divorce where children are involved. Here at the Kelly Law Office, our experience has shown that the needs and interests of the children should carry the highest of priority, and we work to help our clients find common ground around parenting time issues.

In Franklin County (Columbus, Ohio), we have a local rule known as "rule 27" which establishes the minimum visitation for the non-custodial parent of every other weekend, as well as Wednesday evenings. The magistrates in Franklin County Domestic Court are extremely interested in the best interest of our children, and prefer to see time split between each parent as evenly as possible (with the exception of cases where abuse, addiction or neglect may be present). This is due to the unique skills and character qualities that each spouse brings to the child's life, while balancing the children's need to spend quality time with each parent.

Shared parenting also provides that each parent plays a role in all decisions related to the child/children including but not limited to:

  • Education
  • Religious Beliefs, Worship and Training
  • Holidays and Vacations
  • Extra-curricular activities and sporting events
  • Health Care

In Ohio, couples can work together to establish a schedule for shared parenting which reflects the natural ebb and flow of their children's lives while providing a stable and equitable environment for both parents to remain involved and active. We work with our clients to find common ground and offer creative ideas to help establish a shared parenting plan that will work now and into the future. In cases where abuse and neglect are present, we will defend the rights of our clients and their children to protect against any harm, and to ensure the best possible outcome for those children.
